Annapurna Trails: The routes, Maps and the stops

Annapurna Trekking Trails is one of the most trekked trails in Asia. Second only to The One: Mount Everest Base Camp Trekking Trail, Annapurna gives you a large palette to choose from. There are treks in the Annapurna Trails that varies from short 4-day-trek to the 20 long grueling days.

Most of the trail is inside the Annapurna Conservation Area.

Irrespective of the trek you choose, short or long, what you are guaranteed to be greeted with is

Annapurna Base Camp

It is the center of attraction for many trekkers in the Annapurna Trails. Being on the lap of one of the most beautiful and deadliest mountains in the world surely is one unique experience. The base camp is surrounded on all sides by the gigantic mountains. The walls of the mighty Annapurna might even get you out of your comfort zone if you are claustrophobic.

Annapurna though not the highest is the deadliest mountain in the world. It has a death rate of staggering 41%.

Ghandruk Village

Ghandruk is a beautiful Gurung village. All the houses in the villages look exactly the same. They look like something out of the textbook stories.  The residents are warm and welcoming, simple and serene in nature and lifestyle. The view on offer from Ghandruk can only be beaten by the Photographer’s Paradise itself.


The residents of the village- the Gurungs make up for one of the world’s most ferocious and brave fighters-The Gurkhas.

Jhinu Danda

Jhinu Danda is only accessible in the Annapurna Circuit Trek. It is a station famous for its hot water springs. The trekkers after days of trekking feel lucky to have a natural hot spring on their service.

The hot springs are known to be helpful for some of the skin diseases.


The Poonhill is the last stop of the Ghorepani Poonhill Trek. The vista on the sunset and the sunrise is too good to be missed. If you have trouble waking up early, then you will miss the highlight of the trek. The trekkers cherish the sunset on the day they arrive to Poonhill and the sunset the day after. After the magic show of nature is over, the trekkers head back or move on to their next destination.

Poonhill is known among the professional photographers as “The Photographer’s Paradise”


Manang is a village at an elevation of 3519m. Manang is located to the North of the Annapurna Mountain Range. Manang has a unique landscape. Snow covered mountains lay dormant on the backdrop of the grassy fields. The people are warm and welcoming.

They have unique culture and traditions which can be accredited to its Tibetan origins.


Mustang, accessible through the Jomsom Muktinath Trekking is a Time Frozen Zone in the western part of Nepal. Though the world has moved forward very much, the Mustang region of the Annapurna Trails is very much like it was two or three centuries ago. It is a restricted area. Special permits are required to trek in the area. It was opened recently in 1990. Only a limited number of visitors are allowed in this area to save the natural state of the region.

Mustang is a DMZ (Demilitarized Zone).

Annapurna Circuit Trek

This trek is often voted by the trekkers as the best long distance trek in the world. The diversity it has on offer is unmatched by any other treks in the world. The diversity of the trek ranges from the tropical setup in the 600m altitude to the arctic whether it emulates at the elevation of 5416m. The dense forests, yellow and green paddies covering entire hills, heavenly waterfalls, and the fast flowing currents along the way and the snow that is as deep as the knee leaves you awestruck throughout the trek.

This trek also covers the highest point in the whole Annapurna Circuit: Thorung La (5416m) which also touches the edge of the Tibetan Plateau.

Ghorepani Poonhill Trek

This trek is also known as the Annapurna Sunrise Trek. It is called the “Sunrise Trek” because of the scenic views that is rampant on the Poonhill. The vista of the sunrise and the sunset is so good that it cannot be matched by any view in the nation. The unchallenged scenery of the green and red hills in the lap of Eight Thousand meter Mountains earns it the name “The Photographer’s Paradise”. Great photographers sell the shots taken at this hill station for hundreds of dollars.

Jomsom Muktinath Trek

The Muktinath Temple at 3710m resides on the foothills of the highest point in the Annapurna trail- The Thorung La Pass in Mustang, Nepal. Jomsom is also famous for its strong winds.
