Trekking and hiking around Kathmandu Valley

Kathmandu Valley is surrounded by 5 different districts. Some of these districts are great for trekking around Kathmandu Valley. Especially the districts in the Himalayan region which lies north to Kathmandu Valley are tailor made for short hikes.

The Himalayan districts- Sindhupalchowk and Nuwakot offer great vista of the Himalayas. A short trek which leads to one of these districts is highly recommended. Along the trails of these short hikes, you will witness the simple lifestyle of the Nepalese people. Hills covered with paddies dilly dallying with the flow of the wind will soothe you.

From the right spots, you might as well get a clear view of different famous mountains such as Annapurna and Langtang. And if the weather befriends you, you might also get a glimpse of the mighty Everest- that is only if you are in the right place at the right time.

Some of the hottest destinations for short distance trekking around Kathmandu Valley are Chisapani, Nagarkot, Chamapadevi, Phulchowki/Godawari, Kakani, Balthali and Chandragiri.

Chisapani Trek

Chisapani is a small village north of Kathmandu in the district of Sindhupalchowk. The trek starts from Sundarijal- a hotspot for the local people to chill out. You will enter the Shivapuri National Park- where most of the trekking will take place. The maximum time you have to trek on this trail is no more than 5 hours.  The Chisapani trek offers an exquisite view of the Himalayas all along the trails.

The standard package is usually two days long-starting from Sundarijal- Hike to Chisapani- stay the night at Chisapani- Return to Kathmandu.

The alternative is to hike to Nagarkot on the second day and return to Kathmandu in the third.

Chisapani also happens to be one of the major stops for trekking to higher north to the regions such as Gosainkunda and Helambu. If you explore the trail you might even find a helipad along the way where the VIPs used to land in the time when Maoists’ armed revolution was in prime.
